Unlike a mermaid who is half human and half fish, this beautiful sea creature from Celtic and Scandinavian folklore has the ability to transform from a seal into a human by shedding her magical seal skin. In some legends, the Selkie willingly sheds her seal skin to pursue a human life. Other versions paint a bleaker picture with the Selkie being forced to remain human by a man who steals and hides her seal skin during her transformation so that he can marry her.
